�We acquire language and develop literacy when we understand messages, that is, when we understand what we hear and what we read� (Krashen, 2003). Of the four language skills, reading has always been seen as a vehicle for providing students with the opportunity to engage with and build high levels of vocabulary necessary for use in future careers. Extensive Reading (ER) has been shown to be efficient and effective at supporting this goal. This session will demonstrate how to use Extensive Reading in English and Spanish as a means of developing academic vocabulary to support students receiving instruction in English-only as well as English-Spanish dual language programs.
