In 2013, I heard Edutopia broadcast a message about Hour of Code. I was not yet sure of what it was, but I knew I had to get in on it. My principal approved my use of it, and it later became a schoolwide initiative, with my coding students teaching all classes using topics related to varied course curricula. That is when I truly caught the STEM bug. I then felt a calling to teach Robotics, so I attended PD and began a new program. Fast forward to my current time at Hammocks Middle in which I incorporate these skills into our Verizon Innovative Learning Lab and Tech Team. In these experiences, I have always been an advocate for women and people of color in technology because of the doors it opens, not only to future careers but to minds that can travel all around the universe and create worlds of their own. Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math are a nature unifying force, and they snap together like pieces of a puzzle while existing in limitless boundaries.
